Haifa
Located at the base of Mount Carmel, and dating back to at least the third century AD,
Haifa is the largest city in northern
Israel, and the third largest city in the country over all.
The city contains a seaport and is one of
Israel's main industrial centers
As of
2006,
Haifa had an estimated population of 267,000.
Haifa is an important center of the Bahá'í faith, and there are a number of important Bahá'í
sites on Mount Carmel's North slope. These include
the Bahá'í World Centre (comprising the Shrine of the Báb, terraced gardens and administrative buildings),
and the Bahá'í sites are in fact the most visited tourist attraction in the city.
